Google has started rolling out Gemini Personal Intelligence to Android Auto, bringing personalized AI assistance to drivers. Announced on October 20, the update allows Gemini to use information from connected Google apps to answer questions based on users’ personal context, appointments and saved places. The feature builds on Gemini’s existing availability in cars, making the assistant more useful by allowing it to retrieve personal information instead of relying only on general answers.
What Gemini Personal Intelligence Can Do on the Road
With permission, Gemini Personal Intelligence can connect to supported Google services, including Gmail, Google Calendar, Google Photos, Google Maps, YouTube and Google Search. It can retrieve specific details from these apps and combine information from different sources to answer more complex questions.
For example, drivers heading to the airport can ask Gemini for their flight gate and whether their flight is delayed. Instead of searching through emails and checking flight information separately, they can request both details in one conversation.
Gemini can also recommend restaurants along a route based on personal preferences, navigate to an appointment listed in a calendar, or find a destination shown in a previously taken photo. These capabilities aim to make in-car assistance more convenient while reducing the need to handle a phone during a journey.
How to Turn It On
Personal Intelligence is optional and must be enabled through Gemini settings. Users can choose which supported Google apps to connect and turn the feature off at any time.
Those who have already enabled Personal Intelligence in the Gemini app can use their existing preferences in Android Auto. Other eligible users can configure the feature through their Gemini settings.
Without Personal Intelligence, Gemini’s regular in-car functions remain available, including navigation, music, calls and general questions. However, its answers will not be personalized using information from connected apps.
Availability of Gemini Personal Intelligence
Google began rolling out Personal Intelligence to Android Auto on October 20. Availability is gradual, so eligible users may not receive the feature immediately. The rollout covers eligible personal Google accounts belonging to users aged 18 and older. Google Workspace business, enterprise and education accounts are excluded. The feature is also unavailable in the European Economic Area, Switzerland, the United Kingdom and Nigeria.
Cars with Google built-in are expected to receive Personal Intelligence in the coming months. This is a separate rollout, meaning the feature is not yet available in every supported vehicle.
Why This Update Matters
Gemini first arrived on Android Auto in November 2025. The new Personal Intelligence capability builds on that experience by allowing the assistant to connect information across supported Google apps and provide more relevant answers. For drivers, this could mean fewer manual searches and more convenient access to travel details, appointments and saved locations through voice commands. However, the usefulness of the feature will depend on the accuracy of its responses, its availability and how comfortable users feel sharing personal information with an AI assistant. With Personal Intelligence, Google is taking another step toward making Gemini a more context-aware in-car assistant while giving users control over which apps they connect.
