Amazon has renamed its Kindle Unlimited subscription service to Kindle+, while expanding its audiobook collection. The change took effect on October 22, with the service keeping its existing reading features and monthly price of $11.99 in the United States. The rebrand brings a bigger selection of audiobooks at no additional cost to subscribers. However, the expanded audiobook offering is currently limited to the US, so readers in countries such as India may see the new name without receiving the full catalogue of additional audiobooks.
What Amazon Kindle+ Offers
Kindle+ retains the core features of Kindle Unlimited, giving subscribers access to a selection of ebooks, comics, manga and magazines. The subscription price remains unchanged in the US, and members can borrow up to 20 eligible titles at a time without fixed return deadlines. Existing reading history, bookmarks, notes and saved titles are also carried over to the renamed service. Subscribers can continue using Kindle devices or the free Kindle app on compatible phones, tablets and computers.
The biggest change is the addition of thousands of audiobooks to the US catalogue. Readers can listen to eligible titles without paying an extra subscription fee and switch between reading and listening where companion audio is available. Kindle+ remains a separate subscription from Amazon Prime and Audible.
AI Voices Join Human Narrators
Amazon is expanding its audiobook selection with both AI-narrated titles and audiobooks produced using human narrators. Its Virtual Voice technology allows eligible authors to create audiobooks using computer-generated narration. Authors publishing through Kindle Direct Publishing (KDP) can make eligible titles available through the subscription, subject to Amazon’s programme requirements. This does not mean every ebook automatically becomes an audiobook.
Human-narrated audiobooks are also being added through Audible’s Audiobook Creation Exchange (ACX), giving subscribers more options beyond AI-generated voices. The availability of individual titles depends on their eligibility and distribution arrangements.
For readers, the expansion could make it easier to enjoy more books while commuting, exercising or doing other activities. However, those who prefer human narration may want to check which titles use professional narrators before choosing a book.
Limited Rollout for Now
The expanded audiobook catalogue is currently available in the US marketplace, with Amazon planning to extend availability to other markets over time. The company has not announced a firm timeline for countries such as India or Germany. Readers outside the US should therefore check their local Kindle store for available features and subscription pricing rather than assume the US changes apply everywhere. The name change and audiobook expansion are separate parts of the rollout.
What It Means for Readers and Authors
For readers, Kindle+ is primarily an expanded version of an existing subscription rather than a completely redesigned service. The main benefit is access to more audiobooks at the same US monthly price, alongside the ebooks and other content already offered. For independent authors, the expansion creates another potential way to reach subscribers who prefer listening to reading. AI narration may also lower production barriers for eligible titles, although authors must still meet Amazon’s requirements to make their audiobooks available. Overall, Amazon’s rebrand keeps the familiar reading experience while placing greater emphasis on audiobooks. The biggest immediate benefit is for US subscribers, while readers in other markets will need to wait for further availability updates.
