Windows 11 Memory Management Improvements for Better PC Performance

Windows 11 Gets Smarter Memory Management for Better Everyday Performance

Microsoft is improving Windows 11 performance with smarter memory management and reduced background resource usage. The company says selected Windows experiences are now up to 20% more responsive, with improvements across Start, File Explorer, Search, Settings and Snipping Tool. These changes are part of Microsoft’s broader effort to make Windows faster, more reliable and less demanding on system resources, particularly on PCs with limited RAM.

What Has Changed in Windows 11 Memory Management

Microsoft says Windows 11 can now keep up to 2GB more active data in RAM instead of moving it to slower storage. This could help computers remain responsive when users open multiple applications or browser tabs. The company has also introduced memory-saving improvements to reduce background resource usage. On PCs with 8GB of RAM or less, Widgets load only when opened, making more than 200MB of memory available for applications and other tasks. Additional optimizations target Windows components and applications to reduce overhead and improve everyday responsiveness. However, the reported gains do not mean every PC will become 20% faster, as actual results depend on hardware, configuration and usage.

Why Smarter RAM Use Matters for 8GB PCs

Computers with 8GB of RAM can face memory pressure when running Windows alongside browsers, office applications and other software. When available memory becomes limited, Windows may move some data to slower storage, potentially affecting responsiveness. By keeping more active data in memory and reducing unnecessary background activity, Microsoft aims to make everyday tasks smoother, especially when users switch between applications or work with multiple browser tabs. These changes may improve the experience on entry-level and mid-range PCs, although 8GB of RAM can still be restrictive for demanding gaming, video editing and other resource-intensive workloads.

Windows 11 Memory Management and the Latest Updates

Microsoft announced the latest performance improvements in October, with changes beginning to roll out more broadly and further refinements planned. Windows 11 version 26H2 is already available for eligible devices, while individual features may arrive gradually depending on the device and rollout schedule. Other recent improvements include a less disruptive Windows Update experience, faster and more reliable Windows Hello sign-in, and more dependable Bluetooth connections. Microsoft is also continuing to refine Windows Search and other everyday experiences. Users can check Settings > Windows Update for available updates. Installing the latest eligible updates can help them receive improvements as they become available, although not every optimization will appear on every device at the same time.

Final Thoughts

Microsoft’s focus on memory efficiency is welcome news for Windows 11 users, particularly those with 8GB RAM PCs. Keeping more active data in memory and reducing background resource usage could make everyday computing feel smoother. The actual benefits will vary between devices, but these changes represent a continued effort to improve Windows 11 performance without requiring users to upgrade their hardware.
