Universal Cart in Google Search and Gemini for online shopping

Google Universal Cart Arrives in Search With AI Shopping Features

Google has launched Universal Cart in the United States, bringing an AI-powered shopping experience to Google Search and the Gemini app. First introduced at Google I/O 2026, the feature lets shoppers save products from multiple retailers in one place, track price changes, discover discounts, and complete purchases without losing track of their shopping progress.

What is Universal Cart?

Universal Cart is an intelligent shopping hub that brings products from different retailers together in one place. Instead of managing multiple browser tabs or searching for previously viewed products, shoppers can save items and return to them later across supported Google services. Powered by Google’s AI models and Shopping Graph, the cart can monitor products, identify potential savings, and help shoppers manage their purchases more conveniently.

Key AI Shopping Features

Universal Cart offers several features designed to simplify online shopping and help consumers find better deals.

  • Price tracking and stock alerts: The cart monitors saved products and notifies shoppers when prices drop or out-of-stock items become available again.
  • Promotional codes and savings: It can identify relevant promotional codes and highlight potential savings.
  • Product compatibility: AI can flag incompatible products and suggest alternatives, such as components that may not work together when building a custom PC.
  • Payment recommendations: Through Google Wallet, the cart can consider card benefits, cashback opportunities, loyalty rewards, and merchant offers when suggesting payment methods.

These features aim to reduce the time shoppers spend comparing prices and managing purchases across different retailers.

How Checkout Works in Universal Cart

Universal Cart uses Google’s Universal Commerce Protocol (UCP) to support checkout across participating merchants. When shoppers are ready to buy, they can complete eligible purchases directly on Google using Google Pay or transfer their selected items to the retailer’s website to finish checkout. This approach gives consumers a more connected shopping experience while allowing retailers to remain responsible for their sales.

Retailers and Rollout Plans

Google has identified Nike, Sephora, Target, Ulta Beauty, Fenty, Steve Madden, Walmart, Wayfair, and merchants using Shopify among the retailers involved in its Universal Cart plans. As of October 15, 2026, Universal Cart is rolling out in the United States across Google Search and the Gemini app. Google has also indicated that YouTube and Gmail are part of its broader cross-service shopping vision, although those integrations should not be confused with the current launch.

Google is also developing the Agent Payments Protocol (AP2), a related initiative designed to support secure payments by AI agents within predefined spending and purchasing limits.

What It Means for Shoppers and Merchants

For shoppers, Universal Cart offers a more organized way to save products, monitor prices, discover discounts, and manage purchases across Google’s shopping experience.

For merchants, the development highlights the growing importance of accurate product information and visibility across AI-powered discovery tools. Product details, availability, and pricing can influence how shoppers find and evaluate items through Google’s services.

However, consumer trust remains an important consideration. A Bain survey cited in earlier reporting found that 25% of shoppers trusted retailer-owned AI tools to complete purchases, compared with 16% for Google and other technology companies. The figures highlight a potential challenge for AI-driven commerce as shoppers decide how comfortable they are allowing AI tools to influence or assist with buying decisions.

Universal Cart represents Google’s effort to make online shopping more connected and convenient. Its longer-term success will depend on the usefulness of its recommendations, the availability of participating retailers, and shoppers’ confidence in AI-assisted purchases.
