iPhone Handoff Feature for Sharing One Phone Number Across Two iPhones

Apple Introduces iPhone Handoff to Share One Number Across Two iPhones

Apple’s iPhone Handoff feature in iOS 27 lets users switch one phone number between two compatible iPhones without manually transferring it. The feature is designed for people who use multiple iPhones and want to keep their calls and messages connected to the same number. Rather than making both phones active simultaneously, iPhone Handoff moves the active connection between devices. This could make it easier to switch between a primary iPhone and a second device used for work, travel or everyday activities.

What iPhone Handoff Does

Apple introduced iPhone Handoff at WWDC 2026, initially providing limited details about how it would work. The feature uses eSIM technology to let users use the same phone number across two compatible iPhones. Once configured, users can switch between the devices, with the number becoming active on the iPhone they choose to use. Calls, voicemail and messages, including iMessage, SMS, MMS and RCS, follow the active device.

How to Set Up iPhone Handoff

Users can begin the setup process through Settings → Cellular and follow the on-screen instructions to configure the shared number. Both iPhones must run iOS 27 or later and use the same Apple Account. The devices must also meet the required connectivity and messaging settings. Most importantly, the cellular carrier must support iPhone Handoff for the feature to work.

Key Limits of iPhone Handoff

The shared number can be active on only one iPhone at a time. Users cannot use both devices as independently active phones for the same number simultaneously. Some Apple ecosystem features also have limitations. An Apple Watch does not automatically move between the two iPhones, while certain Wallet items, such as transit passes, identification cards and corporate badges, may remain restricted to one device. Users should also check carrier requirements and potential fees before setting up the feature.

Carrier Support for iPhone Handoff

Carrier availability remains a key factor in the feature’s rollout. T-Mobile in the United States and Deutsche Telekom in Germany supported the initial launch, while Verizon and EE have announced plans to add support. Additional carrier availability and pricing depend on the provider and mobile plan. Support from Indian carriers, including Jio, Airtel and Vi, remains unconfirmed, so users in India should check with their providers before expecting to use the feature.

Who Benefits from iPhone Handoff

iPhone Handoff could be useful for people who maintain separate work and personal iPhones or use a second device while travelling or exercising. Instead of manually transferring their number, they can switch the active connection between compatible devices. However, the feature is most useful for people who already own or plan to use two iPhones. Carrier compatibility and any additional subscription costs may also influence whether it is practical for individual users.

When iPhone Handoff Is Available

iPhone Handoff is available with iOS 27, released on September 14, 2026. Its availability depends on carrier support and regional rollout, with additional providers expected to expand access over time. Users should confirm device compatibility, carrier availability and pricing before relying on the feature.
