WhatsApp is trying out something new, allowing people with iPhones to add cover photos to their profiles. This update promises greater personalization, letting users insert a banner-style image above the round profile picture much like LinkedIn or Facebook do. The feature was spotted in the latest WhatsApp beta for iOS via TestFlight as the company continues to experiment with ways to improve user identity on its messaging platform.
WhatsApp is working hard to improve user profiles and offer more ways for people to personalize their look and a new feature is proof of this. Reports suggest that soon users will be able to choose images as a background from their gallery or take one there and then plus move it around or replace it if they want to. And when someone looks at your profile, they’ll see the cover photo too.
Although the feature is still being developed, Android beta versions have shown signs of similar functionality. However, it appears that iOS users will be the first to get early access. WhatsApp has yet to give a release date for cover photos. Because the feature is still in beta testing, WhatsApp could make changes before launching it for everyone.
This step fits with what we’re seeing more generally in social media: Getting really personal with profiles is now a major way to keep users involved. When this feature finally arrives, users might have an even better way of showing off who they are or what their brand stands for helping their personality stand out on the platform.
